Becoming a PADI Instructor consists of developing instructor-level dive knowledge, role-modeling water skills, leadership skills, and learning to teach in confined water, classroom and in open water. The independent study portion of the IDC, accessed through PADI eLearning®, helps prepare you for workshops with your PADI Course Director.
The IDC emphasizes development, not testing, so you learn in a low-stress environment that allows you to concentrate on knowledge and skill development.
The final step to certification is the Instructor Examination (IE), which evaluates your teaching ability, dive knowledge, skills level, understanding of the PADI System, attitude and professionalism - all attributes required of PADI Instructors.
A PADI Divemaster who has been a certified diver for six months may enroll in the PADI Instructor Development Course. (Instructor/leadership level certifications with other recognized recreational diver training organization may also qualify.

Over a minimum of eight days, but usually more like 10, the IDC teaches you to conduct the PADI core courses. If you complete IDC elearning before your course begins, it will save time during your IDC, reduce your workload and provide for a greater learning experience.
You'll be able to organize and present information, conduct skill development sessions as well as organize and control open water dives. The goal is to teach you to be an instructor who effectively manages risk and makes learning at all levels a rewarding, enjoyable experience.
For divers who have completed Assistant Instructor, you will only be required to attend the portion of the IDC you need to complete. If you're only taking the PADI AI course, you'll only take the portions of the IDC correlated with that program. If you're a PADI Assistant Instructor or an instructor with another diver training organization, and taking the OWSI program, you'll only complete those portions of the course.
